A powerful new campaign is launching across Kent this Dementia Action Week (18-24th May), calling for a shift in how people living with dementia are supported - by recognising the person behind the diagnosis.
Alzheimer’s & Dementia Support Services (ADSS), an award-winning Kent-based dementia specialist charity, has launched See Me First, a county-wide campaign highlighting the importance of person-centred care and support.
Through real stories, public installations at Bluewater Shopping Centre and in libraries across Kent and community activity, the campaign aims to challenge perceptions of dementia and ensure individuals are recognised for their identity, relationships and life experiences - not defined solely by their condition.
At the heart of the campaign are the voices of people living with dementia and their families, who share the impact of diagnosis on everyday life - and the difference it makes when care is shaped around the individual.
Katie Antill, Chief Executive at ADSS, said: “Too often, people living with dementia can feel reduced to their diagnosis. See Me First is about reminding us that behind every diagnosis is a person - with a life, a story and things that still matter. Person-centred support isn’t a ‘nice to have’ – it’s essential to ensuring people are treated with dignity and understanding.”
With dementia diagnoses continuing to rise, the demand for support is growing, placing increasing pressure on families who are often left navigating complex systems alone. ADSS provides integrated, specialist support across Kent, working alongside health and care services to ensure individuals receive coordinated, personalised care.
The campaign also aims to connect people with support and advice, encouraging anyone affected by dementia - whether living with a diagnosis or caring for someone - to seek help.
As part of See Me First, the public is invited to hear real stories, access support and take part in the campaign by visiting the dedicated microsite.
