Home should be somewhere you feel safe. But when dementia becomes part of life, everyday things can bring new worries. Our Home Energy Service, delivered in partnership with SGN, offers free, practical support to help make home safer, manage energy costs and protect against scams. We're here to help you Live Life Safe.
Living well with dementia isn't only about care.
It's also about the everyday things that help someone feel comfortable, confident and able to continue living life in the place they know best.
Sometimes the solution might be a Carbon Monoxide alarm.
Sometimes it's a locking cooker valve that makes the kitchen feel safer.
Sometimes it's finding financial support you didn't know existed.
And sometimes it's simply having a trusted person to ask:
“Is there anything else we could be doing?”
That's what our Home Energy Service is here for.
Carbon Monoxide is a colourless, odourless and tasteless poisonous gas, which means you cannot detect it without an alarm.
For someone living with dementia, recognising or communicating the symptoms of Carbon Monoxide exposure may also be more difficult. Our Home Energy Advisor can provide practical safety advice, check what protection you already have in place and help you access an appropriate Carbon Monoxide alarm where eligible.
It's a simple measure that can provide important protection and greater peace of mind at home.
For someone experiencing memory changes, using a gas cooker can sometimes become a source of worry - particularly if they forget to turn it off or accidentally switch it on.
A locking cooker valve allows the gas supply to the cooker to be safely isolated when needed, while helping someone continue living as independently as possible.
We can talk through whether a locking cooker valve could be helpful in your home and support you with the next steps.
If there's an interruption to your gas, electricity or water supply, some people may need a little extra support.
The Priority Services Register is a free service for people who may be more vulnerable or need additional help during an interruption. This could include tailored communication and additional support depending on your circumstances and supplier.
Our Home Energy Advisor can explain what's available, check whether you or the person you care for may be eligible and help you register.
If energy bills are becoming difficult to manage, you don't need to wait until things reach crisis point before asking for help.
Our Home Energy Advisor can look at your individual circumstances, share practical energy-saving advice and help identify grants, fuel support, benefits or other schemes that may be available to you.
Many people simply don't realise what support they could be entitled to. A conversation with us could help make your home warmer, more affordable and easier to manage.
Scams can happen over the telephone, online, through the post or at the front door - and they're becoming increasingly difficult to recognise.
Living with dementia can sometimes make it harder to identify when something isn't quite right, while carers may find themselves worrying about what could happen when they're not there.
We provide practical advice to help people living with dementia and their carers recognise the warning signs, feel more confident dealing with suspicious approaches and know what to do if they are concerned.
Because feeling safe at home isn't only about physical safety - it's about protecting your confidence, independence and finances too.
Carbon Monoxide doesn’t take a summer holiday.
When the weather warms up, Carbon Monoxide can be easy to forget. But BBQs, camping trips, caravans and holiday accommodation can all bring risks that aren’t always obvious.
For people living with dementia and those who care for them, a few simple checks can make all the difference.
Our latest Summer Safety advice covers the hidden risks to look out for and practical steps you can take to help keep yourself and the people you care for safe.
Our Home Energy Service is free and available to people affected by dementia across North Kent, West Kent, Medway and Swale.
You don't need to know exactly what support you need before getting in touch. If something at home is worrying you, talk to us and we'll help you understand what support may be available.
Sometimes it's easier to talk things through with someone who understands.
Our Home Energy Advisor provides friendly, practical support to people affected by dementia and their families. Rather than expecting you to navigate different schemes and services yourself, they can help identify what may be useful and connect you with the right support.
