Support with the costs of care

Depending on your financial situation, you may be eligible for financial support from Social Services to help with the costs of care following a diagnosis of dementia. This financial support can cover both the costs of care in your own home, and residential care.

Paying for care in your own home

The first step is to assess your needs and determine whether you do need support in the home. If the answer is yes, Kent County Council will work out the cost of the care you need and then look at your financial situation to see whether you can make a contribute.

The financial assessment will include looking at your savings and investments, as well as your income, including any pensions and benefits you’re receiving. You can find out more about the assessment process here.

Paying for residential care

Again, the process of deciding whether you qualify for help with residential care starts with an assessment of your care needs followed by a financial assessment.

Generally, if you have more than £23,250 in savings, you will not qualify for financial support. If your savings are below this threshold, Kent County Council will then look at your weekly income, including pensions and benefits, and calculate how much you need to pay towards your residential or nursing care.
